A husband who is harsh with his wife, mistreats her, and communicates with foreign women online cannot justify his actions by claiming he wants to marry [another woman]. If the wife is patient with him, advises him kindly, and supplicates for him, she will be rewarded. The husband's transgression justifies the wife's request for divorce, but patience and an attempt at reform are preferable due to the harm divorce causes to children. Divorce should only be resorted to if its benefit outweighs its harm. If a husband wishes to marry a second wife and is capable of being just, he should not use this as a means to provoke his [first] wife.
