Is comparing religions and using the Bible for propagation an innovation (bid‘ah), knowing that the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, forbade looking into the Torah?

The Torah and the Gospel are from Allah Almighty, and one must believe in them. However, they have been subjected to alteration and distortion. Therefore, one is forbidden from studying them, as the Holy Quran suffices for the truth contained therein. People in studying these books fall into two categories: First: The common person or one weak in faith. Such a person is prohibited from studying them lest they be led astray, due to the falsehoods they contain, and because the Quran suffices in their place. Second: Those firmly grounded in knowledge. It is permissible for them to examine these books when needed to refute opponents and establish proof against them. Scholars have used these books to debate Jews and Christians, which is a legitimate act rooted in the Quran and Sunnah.
