You are required to return what you took unjustly, based on the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever has wronged his brother concerning his honor or anything else, let him seek his forgiveness today, before there will be no dinar or dirham." And his saying: "What the hand has taken must be returned until it is paid back." It is not necessary to inform the rightful owners of what happened, for fear of harm. Rather, the obligation is to return the amount, even through indirect means, such as leaving some entitlements with the intention of settling that right.
