Is a father entitled to grant his male children the apartments they live in, with them bearing part of the cost and registration in their names, to the exclusion of his daughters? What is the ruling on a mother giving her daughters a portion of her jewelry to the exclusion of her sons? Is this considered a deprivation of the daughters, or are the parents free to dispose of their wealth during their lifetime?

An father's dedicating a gift to some of his children to the exclusion of others, or favoring some over others, is impermissible unless there is a legitimate Shar'i reason. This is based on the narration by Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his father: "Have you given all your children a gift like this?" He replied: "No." So the Prophet said: "Then do not make me a witness, for I do not witness injustice." Favoring males over females is one of the characteristics of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). The father must repent to Allah and rectify what he has corrupted by being just in distributing gifts among his sons and daughters. Justice means equalizing between male and female in giving, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Treat your children equally in giving; if I were to favor anyone, I would have favored women."
