The answer

The opening supplication (Du'a al-Istiftah) is a Sunnah according to the majority of jurists. It is recited after the opening Takbir (Takbirat al-Ihram) and before reciting Al-Fatiha. Several formulations have been reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, including: "O Allah, distance me from my sins..." and "I have turned my face towards Him who originated the heavens and the earth..." and "Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise...". It is recommended to alternate between these supplications.
