A woman asks: What are the rights of the husband and the rights of the parents? What is the solution to her problem with her husband's family, who hate her and falsely accuse her? Is it permissible for her husband to give her a choice between him and her family in obedience to his parents?

The rights of parents are great in Islam, and honoring them is among the greatest acts of worship, while disobeying them is among the greatest evils. However, the husband's right takes precedence over the rights of the parents. If the husband forbids his wife from visiting her family, she must obey him. It is advised to try and mend what is between the wife and the husband's mother, and to respond to her ill-treatment with kindness, while obeying the husband and being a helper to him in honoring his parents, and not to be a cause for increasing problems but rather for alleviating them.
