What should one do who has been afflicted by severe distress for four years, and despite his faith in Allah Almighty and his continuous attempts to repel the distress through acts of worship such as prayer, supplication, and seeking forgiveness—even increasing his daily portion of prayer, remembrance, and sending blessings upon the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the affliction has not been lifted from him; rather, the matter has intensified to the point that he doubted Allah's mercy and became angry with Him, saying what is improper, and he doubted himself, wondering whether he is among the Muslims or the hypocrites, and he felt that Allah does not intend good for him, and he feels distressed by reciting the Qur'an, and he fears a constricted life and the Fire?

We ask Allah to grant you healing, for Allah is Wise, placing all things in their proper positions. This affliction is for a great wisdom, which may be to elevate your ranks and test your patience and certainty. You are rewarded for this affliction, and every sorrow that befalls you is an expiation for your sins, and patience magnifies the reward. So beware of impatience, and be careful of ill-manners with Allah. Repent from bad expressions, resort to patience, and adhere to dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and du'a (supplication). We advise you to seek treatment and consult a trustworthy psychiatrist.
