What is the meaning of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) saying: "The most who die from my Ummah after Allah's decree and destiny are by the souls"?

The hadith in question was narrated with the wording: "Most of those who die in my Ummah, after Allah's decree and destiny, die by the evil eye." Some narrated it with the wording: "Most of those who die in my Ummah, after Allah's decree and destiny, die by souls (al-anfus)," and they said that "souls" here means the evil eye.
