Is death an expiation for every sin, as was stated in its meaning by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

The Hadith: "Death is an expiation for every Muslim," is narrated in Shu'ab al-Iman by al-Bayhaqi and Musnad al-Shihab by al-Qada'i. Scholars have differed regarding its meaning and authenticity. Some believe that death here refers to the plague, or that the Muslim referred to is one from whose tongue and hand Muslims are safe, and who has only committed minor sins. Ibn al-Arabi authenticated it, and al-Iraqi graded it as fair (hasan), while al-San'ani, Ibn al-Jawzi, and Ibn Tahir deemed it fabricated (mawdu'). Ibn Hajar, however, objected to this view due to the existence of multiple chains of narration for the Hadith.
