What is the ruling on organ donation?

It is not permissible to donate an organ upon which life depends, such as the heart and liver, because it is considered killing a soul. As for organs upon which life does not depend, such as kidneys and arteries, contemporary scholars have differed on the permissibility of donating them. A number of Islamic conferences, councils, and bodies, such as the Islamic Fiqh Academy and the Council of Senior Scholars, have permitted it. Some scholars have stipulated for the permissibility of transplantation that the donor must be a warring disbeliever.
