The answer

It is permissible to take a benevolent loan (Qard Hasan) from the bank and repay it either in a lump sum or in installments. However, an usurious loan (Qard Ribawi) that is given with an increase is forbidden, whether it is repaid in a lump sum or in installments. There are Sharia-compliant alternatives, such as Islamic banks buying a commodity and selling it to the customer at a profit, and this is permissible. A Muslim must fear Allah and avoid usury, the doer of which Allah has threatened with war, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who gives it, the one who writes it, and its two witnesses.
