The question

Is there a contradiction between the restriction and expansion of one's livelihood by remembering death, if the Hadith is authentic: "Remember often the destroyer of pleasures: Death; for no one remembers it while in straitened circumstances but Allah expands [his livelihood] for him, nor while in ample circumstances but Allah restricts [his livelihood] for him"?

The answer

The remembrance of death alleviates distress and broadens ease. The one who is patient in distress knows that what they are experiencing will pass away with death, and death is more severe than it, thus lightening what they suffer. As for the one in a state of ease, the remembrance of death prevents them from becoming deluded, for they know the perishing of blessings and their imminent departure from them.
