How is the restoration of injustices to their rightful owners achieved within the conditions of repentance, and how does repentance become obligatory before that?
If the sin pertains to the right of Allah Almighty, then sincere repentance from it has detailed conditions. However, if the injustice pertains to the right of a human being: if it is moral, such as backbiting, then repentance is achieved by seeking absolution and forgiveness, provided it does not lead to a greater mischief; otherwise, seeking Allah’s forgiveness (istighfar) and mentioning the virtues of the person suffice. If the injustice is financial, then it is necessary to seek forgiveness or return the right to its owner or their heirs. The meaning of repentance obliterating what preceded it is that if it is sincere and fulfills all its conditions, then it erases the sins that came before it, for "The one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin," and "Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous deeds. For them Allah will change their evil deeds into good ones. And Allah is ever Forgiving, Most Merciful."
