Does the divorce of a man over ninety, who memorized the Qur’an and taught jurisprudence, uttering divorce repeatedly in fits of rage, saying to his wife: “Bear witness that I have divorced so-and-so three times, and that she is divorced, divorced, divorced,” and from whom another heard that he divorced her twelve times, then fifteen times, take effect? And what should the wife do who asks about the permissibility of living with him to serve him due to his weak eyesight and inability to attend to his needs?

If the wife hears her husband divorcing her with the third ṭalāq, she becomes irrevocably separated from him (baynūnah kubrā), and it is not permissible for her to remain with him. She must separate from him, even through khulʿ, based on the statement of Imam Ahmad: "The word is the husband's, unless she has no doubt about his divorce, having heard him divorce her three times. In that case, it is not permissible for her to remain with him; she should flee from him and ransom herself with her wealth." It is obligatory for anyone who heard the divorce to testify to it in court for their separation, because if a right is purely for Allah and its prohibition is enduring, the witness must hasten to testify before the ruler.
