The question

What is the duration upon which spotting (al-kudrah) is considered connected to menstruation (al-hayd) before or after its onset, especially if it appears a day or two before menstruation, then stops for half a day, then menstruation begins? Or if, after menstruation, the area becomes dry for ten hours or less, or more, then spotting appears in a not insignificant amount? And in this case, should the woman stop praying?

The answer

Scholars hold different opinions regarding the ruling on yellowish and brownish discharges (ṣufrah and kudrah). The fatwa adopted by us is that of the Hanbali school, which states that yellowish and brownish discharges are considered menstruation if they occur during the habitual period or are continuous with the menstrual flow. If a woman sees them before menstruation, they are not considered menstruation unless they occur during her habitual period. If she sees them after purification (ṭuhr), then if they are outside her habitual period, she should not pay attention to them. However, if they are within her habitual period, they are considered menstruation. If they immediately follow blood without her seeing purity, they are considered menstruation, as long as they do not exceed 15 days.
