What is the ruling on shaving the beard in the Maliki madhhab?

The Maliki school of thought and others prohibit shaving the beard. The Malikis further stipulated that the one who shaves it should be disciplined in a way that deters him. Al-Hattab al-Maliki mentioned that shaving the beard and mustache is impermissible, and that it is a mutilation (muthla) and an innovation (bid'ah). Whoever does so should be disciplined, unless he intends to enter the state of ihram for Hajj and fears his mustache is too long. Shaving the mustache here means eradicating it, not merely trimming it.
