And upon you be peace and Allah's mercy. What is the description of trimming the mustache, and is it permissible to lighten the beard, and what is the limit for that if it is permissible?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded to oppose the polytheists, to lengthen the beards, and to trim the mustaches. Scholars have different opinions regarding trimming the mustaches. As for trimming the beard, it is permissible for the pilgrim (Hajj) and the 'Umrah performer to take what exceeds a fistful, as Ibn 'Umar did. However, trimming it outside of Hajj and 'Umrah is a violation of the Prophet's command to lengthen it, and Allah has warned those who disobey His command. Some scholars have permitted trimming the beard if it is excessively long or wide to the point of disfiguring one's appearance, in order for it to return to a moderate length.
