Are those who trim their beards and let their mustaches grow equal in sin to those who take from their beards less than a fistful?

Trimming the beard is forbidden according to the majority of scholars, while shortening it to less than a fist-length is a matter of dispute among them. One who shortens his beard is not like one who shaves it completely. Lengthening the mustache is contrary to the Sunnah, but there is no sin in it according to the majority.
