Are issues concerning shortening the beard, or taking from what exceeds a fistful of it, or shaving part of it and leaving part of it, matters of juristic discretion about which there is no objection, or matters of dispute about which there is objection?
The Prophet commanded to leave the beard untouched, and it is not authentically reported that he ever trimmed anything from it. However, it is authentically reported that some Companions trimmed what exceeded a fistful. The jurists are unanimous on the prohibition of shaving the beard, and on the prohibition of trimming anything from it that is less than a fistful, and agreement on this has been narrated. One who shaves his beard or trims less than a fistful is to be denounced.
