Must I return the property that my step-grandfather gifted to me and then asked to have back?

It is forbidden for the giver to revoke his gift, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "The one who revokes his gift is like a dog that vomits and then returns to its vomit." So, if the donee takes possession of the gift, it becomes his property and he is not obligated to return it.
