If a patient suffering from back pain, whose condition is deteriorating day by day and who is experiencing high blood sugar and severe thirst, encounters a situation similar to what has been described, is he permitted to break his fast, and how should he make up for the days he misses, especially if his illness is chronic?
If fasting exacerbates a man's illness, he must break his fast if a doctor confirms its danger to him. He should break his fast and make up the days he missed after if the severity of his illness occurs intermittently, as Allah says: "So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days." There is no (expiatory feeding) upon him in addition to making up the fasts. However, if his illness becomes chronic and there is no hope of recovery, and he is unable to fast, then he must break his fast and pay fidyah for each day. The fidyah is one mudd of food (750 grams of rice) according to the majority of scholars.
