The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade having sexual intercourse with female captives until they had purified themselves, meaning for a pregnant woman to give birth, and for a non-pregnant woman to complete one menstrual cycle. This is based on the of Abu Sa'id regarding the captives of Awtas: "A pregnant woman should not be lain with until she gives birth, nor a non-pregnant woman until she has completed one menstrual cycle."

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted sexual intercourse with female slaves whose wombs were confirmed to be clear. Scholars differed on the necessity of purification (istibra') for virgins, post-menopausal women, and young girls. The preponderant opinion is that istibra' is only for the purpose of confirming the emptiness of the womb. Therefore, if the emptiness is known, then istibra' is not obligatory.
