Are the deeds of a person insistent on sin (such as adultery, sodomy, and theft) accepted in terms of the balance of good deeds and bad deeds, and are the charities and deeds of a repentant sinner (such as a murderer) accepted?

Committing major sins and persisting in minor sins does not affect the acceptance of good deeds, except for major shirk (associating partners with Allah), which nullifies all deeds, and minor shirk, which nullifies the deed it accompanies. Allah Almighty says: "If you associate [anything] with Allah, your work will surely become worthless."

Similarly, the reward for charity is nullified by boasting and causing harm, as Allah Almighty says: "Do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of it] or injury." It has also been reported that the reward for the prayer of a wine-drinker and one who goes to a soothsayer or diviner is nullified, but this does not mean that the prayer is not valid or that one's duty is not discharged.

Despite the acceptance of deeds, committing major sins and persisting in minor ones is dangerous, for a single major sin can nullify an equivalent amount of good deeds.

As for acts of obedience, they are accepted even with the commission of sins, and their acceptance with repentance from them is preferable, for the sins of one who repents are transformed into good deeds. Allah Almighty says: "Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds - for them Allah will change their evil deeds into good ones."
