How sound is the ruling that naming mosques after individuals is reprehensible (makruh), and what is the opinion regarding naming mosques such as Sayyidah Zaynab, Al-Husayn, and Ahmad al-Rifa'i?
Some scholars disliked naming mosques after individuals, but the majority of scholars permitted it without any dislike. Imam al-Bukhari, in his , dedicated a chapter titled: "Chapter: Is it permissible to say 'Mosque of Banu so-and-so'?" and cited the of Ibn Umar, which mentions "the mosque of Banu Zuraiq." This indicates the permissibility of attributing mosques to their builders or those who pray in them for identification, not for ownership, as stated by Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar. There is no harm in naming a mosque after one of the Muslim scholars for the purpose of identification. However, a mosque should not be named after someone known for innovation as a form of glorification for them.
