What is the difference between gambling and trading in stocks, taking into consideration the manipulations and raising and lowering of prices through false advertising and back-room deals, and the addiction of many people to this non-productive activity, and its similarity to gambling in bearing profit and loss?
The gambler's oscillation between profit and loss does not mean that every transaction involving this is gambling; otherwise, all sales and partnerships would be forbidden. Gambling was forbidden because it does not involve a counter-value or any effort other than paying money. It is a consumption of people's wealth through falsehood and leads to enmity and hatred, as Allah Almighty says: (O you who have believed, indeed intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing to] stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may succeed. Satan only wants to cause animosity and hatred between you through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?)
