The story in brief: Sa'da, the mother of Zayd ibn Harithah, visited her people accompanied by Zayd. Horses belonging to Banu al-Qayn ibn Jisr attacked Banu Ma'n, and Zayd was taken and sold in the Souk Okaz. Hakim ibn Hizam bought him for his aunt, Khadijah, who then gifted him to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after her marriage to him.

Zayd's family learned of his whereabouts, so his father and uncle came to ransom him. The Prophet offered Zayd the choice of staying with him or returning with his family, and Zayd chose to stay with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet then declared, "Bear witness that Zayd is my son; he inherits from me and I inherit from him." Thus, Zayd was called Zayd ibn Muhammad until Islam prohibited adoption with the words of Allah Almighty: "And He has not made your adopted sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allah says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way. Call them by [the names of] their fathers; that is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your freedmen."
