Was Zayd ibn Harithah's father - may Allah be pleased with him - a Companion?

Harithah ibn Shurahbil, the father of Zayd ibn Harithah, was mentioned among the Companions, though there is disagreement regarding the authenticity of this. Abu Nu'aym stated in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" that he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, seeking his son and embraced Islam. Ibn Mandah and Al-Hakim narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, invited him to Islam, and he accepted. However, Ibn Mandah commented: "This is strange; we only know it from this single narration." Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Al-Isabah": The narrators in its chain are unknown, and what is established is that Harithah came to Mecca seeking his son Zayd, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave Zayd a choice, whereupon Zayd chose to stay with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Hajar did not find any mention of Harithah's conversion to Islam except through this narration.
