What is the ruling on nationalism if it is based on the foundations of Islam, and does it differ from patriotism?

"Nationalism" is an invented term created by polytheists to fragment Islamic unity. A Muslim is obligated to love the lands of the Muslims and defend them, whether it is their original homeland or not. For the love of Islamic lands and their defense is a religious duty, stemming from the requirements of loyalty (wala') and disavowal (bara') in Islam. A Muslim must base their loyalty and disavowal solely on Islam. Allah Almighty says: "Your protector is none other than Allah, His Messenger, and the believers—those who establish prayer, give zakah, and bow down in worship. And whoever takes Allah, His Messenger, and the believers as protectors, then the party of Allah—they are the triumphant."
