Abortion after four weeks is forbidden and impermissible except out of a necessity verified by Islamic law, such as a risk to the mother's life, as confirmed by a reliable medical report. If the abortion occurs before the formation of the fetus (i.e., before 40 days), then repentance is required, but no expiation.
