Is it permissible to replace the stoning of the married fornicator with killing by sword or shooting?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The duty is to stone the married, adult fornicator to death, following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who stoned Ma'iz, the Juhaniyah woman, the Ghamidiyah woman, and the two Jews. The scholars have unanimously agreed on this, based on the verse of stoning that was revealed in the Quran, as mentioned by Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. It is not permissible to replace stoning with execution by sword or shooting, because stoning is a more severe punishment and deterrent, and it is a prescribed punishment for which there is no room for ijtihad (independent reasoning).
