What should the obedient wife do whose husband does not respect her, insults her, curses her, and describes her as weak? Should she defend herself or continue in this state, knowing that she can no longer bear it?

Allah commanded kind treatment of wives. The wife's rights include: feeding, clothing, avoiding striking the face or demeaning her with words or insults, and not abandoning her except within the home. Insulting a Muslim is a transgression (fusuq), and it is even more severe between spouses. The husband must fear Allah and remember the Prophet's injunction regarding women. The wife must be patient and repel evil with good. If the husband does not reform and the wife is unable to bear the harm, she has the right to seek divorce to avert harm, especially if the harm is religiously impermissible, such as abandonment without cause, striking, or verbal abuse.
