The question

Is a woman who miscarried a three-month-old fetus considered a postpartum woman (Nafsa) and subject to the rulings of post-natal bleeding (Nifas) if she experienced bleeding for two weeks, followed by yellow, brown, and red mucous discharge, and then heavy bleeding from day 33 to 41 after the miscarriage, whereupon the bleeding stopped and she performed ghusl, but then light red blood and dark brown streaks appeared after the ghusl? And is she obligated to pray, and is it permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her in this situation?

The answer

Whatever blood, yellowish discharge, or brownish discharge a woman sees during the forty-day period is considered nifas (postnatal bleeding). And whatever she sees after the forty days is not nifas; because the maximum duration of nifas is forty days. As for blood that returns after purification, if it coincides with the time of her regular menstrual period, it is menses (hayd). Otherwise, it is istihada (irregular bleeding), and in such a case, she must perform ablution for every prayer, taking precautions, and it does not prevent intercourse.
