Penetrating the anus with the penis is forbidden. However, enjoying it without penetration is permissible. Scholars have differed regarding the necessity of ghusl (ritual bath) when engaging in intercourse with a barrier. Some held that ghusl is not obligatory if the barrier is thick, while others maintained that it is obligatory unconditionally, or distinguished between a thin and a thick barrier. The preponderant opinion is that ghusl is obligatory when engaging in intercourse with a barrier, regardless of whether it is thin or thick. This is because it is considered sexual intercourse, it achieves pleasure, and it absolves one's responsibility.
