What is the ruling on settling a deceased person's debt, and is it required to expedite that?
Whoever dies while in debt falls into one of two situations: Either he leaves behind wealth, in which case his debt must be paid from it before the distribution of the inheritance. Or he does not leave behind wealth, in which case he will not be held accountable for it if his intention was to repay it, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever takes the money of people with the intention of repaying it, Allah will repay it on his behalf; and whoever takes it with the intention of destroying it, Allah will destroy him." The heirs are not obligated to pay off the debt of the deceased who did not leave behind any wealth, and whoever among them does so will be rewarded.
