Is it necessary to stop performing the regular Sunnah prayers in order to make up for accumulated missed prayers, and which of the two takes precedence?

If you missed prayers due to negligence, you must repent and make up all the missed prayers. If you do not know their number, strive to estimate what you predominantly believe to be the correct number until your obligation is fulfilled. Make them up according to your capacity, in a way that does not harm your body or your livelihood. Scholars have differed regarding performing supererogatory (nafl) prayers alongside making up missed ones:

- Some hold that absolute supererogatory prayers are disliked, but allow for regular sunnah (rawatib) prayers.

- Some believe that supererogatory prayers are better than abandoning them for someone who neglects making up missed prayers.

- And some distinguished between missing prayers with an excuse and without an excuse. If there was an excuse, supererogatory prayers are permissible. If there was no excuse, performing supererogatory prayers before making up the missed ones is not permissible, and one must hasten to make them up, except for necessities.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded making up the missed prayers on the day of the Battle of the Trench without mentioning supererogatory prayers between them, because the obligatory prayer is more important. However, if the missed prayers are few, then it is permissible to make up the regular sunnah (rawatib) prayers.
