Is it permissible to perform the Athan in a language other than Arabic, and is it permissible to translate it for understanding?

The majority of jurists hold that the Adhan (call to prayer) is not valid if performed in a language other than Arabic. If it is called in Persian or another language, it is not valid. This is the view of the Hanafis and Hanbalis. The Malikis stipulate that the Adhan must be performed using the prescribed Arabic phrases. As for the Shafi'is, they elaborated on the matter: if the Adhan is called for a congregation and there are those among them who understand Arabic, it is not sufficient to call it in another language. However, it is sufficient if there is no one who understands Arabic. If a person calls the Adhan for himself and understands Arabic, it is not sufficient to call it in another language. But if he does not understand Arabic, it is sufficient. There is no harm in translating it for the purpose of teaching and understanding.
