What is Islam?
Islam is submission to Allah through monotheism, obedience, and freedom from polytheism. It is one of the three ranks of the religion. Its pillars are five: the two testimonies of faith (Shahadatayn), the establishment of prayer (Salat), the giving of charity (Zakat), fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House for those who are able. When mentioned alongside Iman (faith), it encompasses outward actions. When mentioned alone, it encompasses both outward and inward actions. Islam is the religion that Allah has approved, and it supersedes all previous laws. The name Islam is not limited to the religion of Muhammad, peace be upon him, but rather it is the name of the religion revealed to all prophets.
