Scholars have differed on the linguistic meaning of fiqh. Some say it means "absolute understanding," while others say it means "understanding the speaker's intent from their words," and still others say it means "understanding subtle matters." The last of these was favored by Al-Qarafi. As for its technical definition, it is the knowledge of practical Sharia rulings derived from their detailed proofs. It is called Islamic fiqh because its source and basis is Islamic legislation, which relies on the Quran and Sunnah.
