What are the sources of Islamic legislation?
The original sources of the religion are the Qur’an and the Sunnah, for the Islamic religion is based on infallible texts revealed from heaven. From these two sources, scholars have derived other principles such as ijma' (consensus) and qiyas (analogy), which are considered secondary sources. There are other sources over whose authoritative nature scholars have differed, but they are subordinate to the Qur’an and Sunnah and refer back to them.
