What are the limits of anger that prevent the occurrence of divorce, and does the third divorce, issued in a moment of extreme anger, take effect, knowing that the wife had become pure from menstruation at that time but had not yet performed ghusl?

There are three stages for a person in a state of anger regarding the occurrence of divorce (talaq):

- His divorce is effective if he pronounces it while being aware of what he is saying, such as when he divorces in intense anger but still comprehends what he is saying.

- His divorce is not effective if he pronounces it in such intense anger that he does not comprehend what he is saying, because he is in the same حكم (ruling) as an insane person.

- If the divorce occurs two or three times, and the wife is under the husband's marital bond or within her waiting period (iddah), she becomes irrevocably separated from him with a major separation (baynunah kubra), and she is not lawful for him until she marries another husband, he consummates the marriage with her, and then he divorces her.

- The occurrence of divorce after purification from menstruation and before performing ghusl (ritual bath) is valid according to the majority of scholars, while Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that it is not effective. He also holds that divorce is not effective if it occurs during menstruation or postpartum bleeding (nifas), or during a period of purity in which sexual intercourse has taken place, or before a رجعة (revocation of divorce) or renewal of the marriage contract.
