What is the ruling on passing around musk bottles among worshippers in the mosque while awaiting prayer, lessons, or the Friday sermon for the purpose of perfuming oneself?
Exchanging perfume bottles during the Friday sermon is not permissible, as it distracts listeners from the sermon. Indeed, touching pebbles was forbidden for fear of idle talk. Whoever is offered perfume at that time should decline it and listen attentively to the sermon. As for before the sermon, it is good, and it is part of taking adornment at the mosques. In other recommended sermons, such as the Eid and rain-seeking sermons, speaking and being preoccupied during them is disliked. As for during academic lessons, it is contrary to what is better, and it is preferable for that to be before or after the lesson. And whoever is offered perfume at times other than these should not refuse it, except for a valid excuse.
