Is a husband permitted to beat, curse, and humiliate his wife?

Cursing a Muslim is a transgression, and the sin escalates if the cursing is directed at one's wife, due to her additional rights. Hitting one's wife without just cause is forbidden and considered among the major sins. Islam has honored and dignified women. Jurists have established that harm inflicted by a man upon his wife is grounds for her to seek divorce and for him to receive severe disciplinary punishment. As for permissible hitting, it is only in the case of a wife's 'nushuz' (rebellion), after admonition and desertion, and under conditions that it is not severe, not on her face, that he does not insult her, that the intention is to reform the wife, and that he stops once the objective is achieved. For a husband to claim this is his right without cause is a falsehood against Allah.
