What is the ruling on insulting and cursing a husband in his presence due to severe beating, and is it considered one of the major sins, and how can one repent from it?
It is not permissible for a wife to curse or verbally abuse her husband if he has not cursed or verbally abused her. A husband striking his wife does not justify her cursing or verbally abusing him. A wife is considered unjust to her husband if she verbally abuses him without just cause. Al-Dhahabi regarded cursing and verbal abuse as major sins. If a wife curses or verbally abuses her husband in retaliation because he has cursed or verbally abused her, and she does not exceed the limit, then there is no sin upon her, based on the Almighty's saying: "So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same manner that he assaulted you." However, forgiveness is more virtuous, especially between spouses, fearing the disintegration of the family. A wife is permitted to supplicate against her husband to the extent of his injustice, but she is not permitted to curse him, because cursing is expulsion from the mercy of Allah, which is a serious matter.
