Is it forbidden to corrupt the environment (or what is called the natural فطرة - innate disposition) only when there is direct harm to people, or does this include cutting or burning trees without need, hunting animals for recreation, killing insects in the forest, and exterminating a species of animals?

Islamic Sharia preceded man-made laws in preserving the environment and animals. It prohibited killing animals without a valid benefit, disliked hunting for mere amusement, forbade using anything with a soul as a target, and prohibited relieving oneself in public places. It encouraged watering animals and showing kindness to them, emphasized the importance of performing animal slaughter with excellence, and encouraged planting trees while warning against cutting them down unless for a benefit or to ward off harm.
