What is the meaning of the fifteenth verse of Surat An-Nisa, and does it mean imprisoning an adulteress for life or punishing her with that? And what is "the way" that Allah will make for them?

Allah the Almighty said in Surat An-Nisa: (And those who commit illegal sexual intercourse of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify, confine them to houses until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another] way). Ibn Kathir indicates that this verse was the initial ruling for an adulteress in Islam, where she would be confined to her home until death overtook her. This ruling was abrogated by the verses of Surat An-Nur, which specified the punishment for adultery as flogging or stoning, as confirmed by the hadith of 'Ubada ibn As-Samit.

Al-Qurtubi adds that this ruling was temporary and was abrogated by the prescribed punishment for adultery: an unmarried person is flogged one hundred lashes and exiled for one year, while a married person is flogged one hundred lashes and stoned to death. The following verse: (And the two who commit it among you, dishonor them both. But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allah is ever Accepting of repentance and Merciful). Ibn Kathir explains this verse as referring to male and female adulterers, and the initial punishment was humiliation and reproof, which was then abrogated by flogging or stoning. And if the two adulterers repent and correct themselves, they should be left alone and not further chastised.
