What is the ruling on a Muslim who does not know the Arabic language? Is learning it an individual obligation (fardh) or a communal obligation (wajib) upon every Muslim? What is the ruling on someone who dies without having learned it? Is it permissible to pray or recite the Quran in a language other than Arabic to facilitate the spread of the religion? And is this better than those who memorize the Quran without understanding its meanings?

Learning the Arabic language is a communal obligation (fard kifaya) upon the Ummah. Every Muslim must learn what suffices them to perform their obligatory prayers, as recitation and remembrances (adhkar) are not permissible in languages other than Arabic according to the majority of scholars. As for the scholar of Sharia, it is obligatory for them to learn Arabic to understand the Quran and Sunnah. Reciting the Quran in languages other than Arabic is not permissible according to the majority of scholars, whether inside or outside of prayer, because reciting it in other languages strips it of its miraculous nature. Learning the Arabic language helps in understanding the intent of Allah and His Messenger, and it warns against distorting meanings due to ignorance of it. Supplicating in a language other than Arabic is disliked except for those who are unable to do so properly. Translation is permissible for understanding the meanings of the Quran, Sunnah, and prescribed remembrances.
