How can a young man reconcile his desire to marry a girl he loves with his current inability to afford the marriage for two more years, especially when he fears abandoning or wronging her by delaying their marriage, given that she is 22 years old?

A Muslim who finds love for a woman in his heart must keep himself chaste and avoid falling into anything with her that displeases Allah. It is not permissible for him to establish an emotional relationship with her; rather, he must sever all ties with her because she is a non-mahram to him. As for marriage, it is the best remedy for those who love each other, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Nothing like marriage has been seen for two who love each other."

If you wish to marry her, there is no harm in proposing to her and solemnizing the marriage contract while delaying the consummation until your affairs become easier. However, it is not recommended to prolong the engagement period or the contract with delayed consummation to avoid discord.

If you are unable to afford the marriage soon, then completely disregard her and focus on your studies. If Allah facilitates your affairs later, then propose to marry her. If she marries someone else, then look for another, as there are many women, and Allah may provide you with someone better than her. Turn to Allah with supplication and ask Him for a righteous wife, for He knows best what is good.

If you promised her marriage, it is preferable to fulfill the promise. However, not fulfilling the promise does not make you unjust to her, as fulfilling a promise is recommended, not obligatory, according to the majority of jurists.
