What is the ruling on working as an accountant in a semi-governmental insurance company, knowing that the rate of life insurance in it does not exceed 2% of its total transactions, and it does not obtain its money from its customers through usurious interest even if payment is delayed, and most of its contracts are based on mutual consent, and other branches of insurance are optional except for compulsory car insurance, with no Islamic alternatives for work available? Is it permissible to approve my marriage to a girl while I work in this field?
Commercial insurance, of all types, is not permissible according to Sharia because it is based on uncertainty (gharar) and gambling (maysir). Therefore, working in commercial insurance companies is not permissible except in cases of necessity, which should be assessed according to its extent. One must leave such work when no longer in need or when a permissible alternative is available.
As for a woman's guardian accepting a suitor who works in these companies, the fundamental principle is the Hadith: "If someone whose religion and character you approve of comes to you, then marry him." If the man is compelled to work in these companies while being observant of his religious duties and of good character, then there is no harm in accepting him as a husband. Otherwise, it is better to reject him.
