Is an infidel considered a martyr if he dies by drowning?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Martyrdom is a great status that an infidel cannot attain, even if they die due to one of the causes of martyrdom, because the condition for attaining it is belief in Allah and His Messengers. One who does not believe in Allah and His Messengers will have no share in the Hereafter, as Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - never will there be accepted from one of them an amount of gold filling the earth, if he would offer it in ransom. For those, there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers." Scholars have unanimously agreed that an infidel who dies in a state of disbelief will have no reward in the Hereafter. Therefore, martyrdom due to death by drowning or any other cause is exclusive to the people of faith.
