Is a debt waived for someone who drowns after their soul is taken?

Death by drowning is martyrdom. It was reported in the noble Hadith that "The martyrs are five: the one who dies of plague, the one who dies of an abdominal disease, the one who drowns, the one who dies under a collapsing building, and the martyr in the cause of Allah." The martyrs of the Afterlife are not all of the same rank in reward, as martyrdom varies in degree.

A drowned martyr is not exempt from the rights of other people, and their debts are not waived except by the forgiveness of their creditors, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Every sin of a martyr is forgiven except debt." So, if a battlefield martyr's debt is not forgiven, then it is even more fitting that a drowned martyr's debts not be forgiven, as they are of a lesser rank.

As for the belief that Allah Almighty Himself directly seizes the soul of the drowned person, it has no basis; rather, it is false. The Angel of Death and his assisting angels are entrusted with seizing the souls of people, as indicated by Quranic verses such as His saying, the Almighty: "Say, 'The Angel of Death, who has been entrusted with you, will take your souls; then to your Lord you will be returned.'"
